If you are drawn to protecting people at work and want a career with real responsibility, becoming a safety professional is one of the most in-demand paths in industry today. This guide explains what the role involves, how the typical career path works, and how AHIA can help you get there.

What Does a Safety Professional Do?

A safety professional (also called an HSE Officer, Health & Safety Advisor, or HSE Manager, depending on seniority) is responsible for identifying workplace hazards, assessing and controlling risk, investigating incidents, ensuring legal and regulatory compliance, and building a culture of safety within an organisation. It is a career found in every industry, including construction, oil & gas, manufacturing, logistics, and healthcare.

The Typical Career Path

Most safety careers follow a similar progression, regardless of which country or industry you work in:

1. Entry-level foundation. A foundation qualification (equivalent to IOSH Working Safely or NEBOSH-style awareness training) introduces core hazard identification and risk assessment skills. This is often taken by workers who have safety duties alongside another job.

2. Practitioner level. An intermediate qualification, such as an OTHM-accredited Level 3-5 diploma in Occupational Health and Safety, prepares you for dedicated roles such as HSE Officer or HSE Advisor, where you carry out risk assessments, inspections, and incident investigations day to day.

3. Management level. With experience, professionals move into HSE Manager or Compliance Manager roles, often supported by a higher-level qualification such as an OTHM Level 6 or 7 Diploma, and by management-systems training such as ISO 45001 (Occupational Health and Safety), ISO 9001 (Quality), or ISO 14001 (Environmental) Lead Auditor courses.

4. Senior and chartered level. The most experienced professionals go on to senior HSE leadership, consultancy, or training roles, and many pursue chartered status with a recognised professional body, which typically requires several years of senior-level experience alongside a diploma-level qualification.

How to Get Started with AHIA

AHIA offers a training pathway that follows this same progression, combining EOSH foundation training, OTHM-accredited qualifications, and ISO Lead Auditor courses (ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and ISO 45001), so you can build your career step by step with internationally recognised credentials.

Your Recommended Study Path

To help you plan your studies efficiently, AHIA recommends the following order, combining qualifications where their study periods overlap well:

This pathway is offered as a personal training package, tailored to your own background and goals. Enrolment on this package is subject to a starter approval from AHIA, following a short initial assessment.

Step 1 — Level 3. Start with the OTHM Level 3 Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety to build your foundation knowledge and confirm this career path is right for you.

Step 2 — Level 6, combined with Lead Auditor training. Progress to the OTHM Level 6 Diploma. During this same period, we recommend also completing an ISO Lead Auditor course (ISO 45001, 9001, or 14001), since the two qualifications complement each other and can be studied side by side without extending your overall timeline.

Step 3 — MBA, combined with further Lead Auditor training. For those aiming for senior management or consultancy roles, an MBA can be studied alongside a further ISO Lead Auditor qualification, building strategic business skills and technical audit credentials at the same time.

Exact scheduling depends on the specific courses and your own pace of study — contact us and we will help you plan a timeline that fits your situation.

Entry Requirements

To enrol on AHIA’s safety professional pathway, applicants should generally meet the following minimum requirements:

– A minimum of 2 years of technical or practical work background (for example, in construction, engineering, manufacturing, or a related operational field).
– A minimum age of 25 years.

Specific courses may have additional requirements depending on their level and accrediting body. Contact us if you are unsure whether you meet the criteria for a particular qualification.
